Choosing a material

Pine bark holds its color and lasts longest between refreshes. Pine straw is light, knits together, and sits well on the sloped lots that fall toward the lakes. On beds right beside the water we steer away from small bark nuggets, which float off in a hard rain.

We’ll suggest a material for each bed, or match what’s there now if you like it.

Mulch and the one-day watering limit

Tavares falls under the St. Johns River Water Management District’s current water shortage order, which allows irrigation one day a week. A full layer of mulch slows evaporation from bed soil between those waterings, which makes it the least expensive way to carry shrubs through a dry spell.

Best time of year

Late winter into early spring works well: the oaks have finished dropping and the heat hasn’t arrived. Straw breaks down faster than bark and usually wants topping up again by fall.
