Lawn fertilization in Tavares, FL
Feedings timed for St. Augustine and Bahia, the setback from the lake measured off your seawall, and the rules for your parcel, city or county, followed to the letter.
Which fertilizer rules cover your Tavares lawn
A Tavares mailing address doesn’t always mean City of Tavares rules. Many lakefront homes with a Tavares address are in unincorporated Lake County. Your tax bill or the Lake County Property Appraiser record lists the parcel’s taxing district, and we check it before the first application.
- Inside city limitsNo fertilizer within 10 feet of a lake, canal, wetland or the top of a seawall, cut to 3 feet with a deflector shield, drop spreader or sharp-edged liquid applicator. No nitrogen or phosphorus during a flood, tropical storm or hurricane watch or warning, or on saturated soil. The city code has no seasonal ban.
- Unincorporated Lake CountyNo nitrogen or phosphorus on turf from June 1 through September 30; summer blends of micronutrients with no N or P are allowed. A fertilizer-free zone within 15 feet of any pond, stream, lake, canal or wetland at all times. From October 1 through May 31, nitrogen must be at least 50% slow-release.
Every application is made under Florida’s fertilizer application rules and the local code that covers your address.
What month to fertilize a lawn in Tavares
UF/IFAS puts Lake County in its central Florida region. For St. Augustine and Bahia, the first feeding goes down in spring once the lawn has greened up and is actively growing, and the last in early fall.
On a county parcel, the June 1 to September 30 ban takes nitrogen and phosphorus out of the summer entirely, so the fall feeding waits for October. Inside city limits, summer feeding is allowed, but the storm-watch rule rules out a lot of rainy-season days, and slow-release nitrogen makes the most sense when afternoon storms are a daily event.
What fertilizer a Tavares lawn needs
Nitrogen, mostly slow-release, so it feeds the grass over weeks instead of washing through sandy soil after the first storm. Lake County soils usually hold enough phosphorus already; UF/IFAS recommends adding it only when a soil test shows the lawn is short. Potassium and iron help St. Augustine through the heat, and on a county parcel a micronutrient blend with no N or P is the summer option.
We don’t use weed-and-feed products. Weed control is a separate, licensed pest-control service and isn’t part of our work.
How we apply fertilizer on a lakefront lot
- Setback firstMeasured from the top of the seawall or the water’s edge before the spreader comes out: 10 feet (3 with a deflector) inside the city, 15 feet on a county parcel.
- Controlled spreadingDeflector shield or drop spreader on every pass near water, beds and paving.
- CleanupGranules blown back onto the turf, never toward the lake or a storm drain.
- WeatherNothing on saturated soil, and nothing when a storm watch or warning is up.
- Buffer stripThe native buffer along the water that UF/IFAS recommends gets no fertilizer at all.

Other services in Tavares
Lawn mowing
The full job on the same weekday: cut, trimmed, edged and blown clean. Weekly from spring into fall, every second week in the cool months.
Yard cleanup
For the lot that got ahead of you, a vacant rental, an estate property or a home headed to market. We get it back to something a mower can keep up with.
Hedge trimming
Privacy hedges shaped, foundation plants pulled back off the siding and pool screen, and the clippings taken away.
Mulch
Weeds out, bed line cut, then a fresh layer at the depth UF/IFAS recommends, kept clear of tree trunks and the foundation.
Leaf cleanup
Oaks here shed in late winter and spring, just as the lawn starts growing again. We clear the turf, beds and paving and take the leaves away.
Palm trimming
We take off what is dead or dropping and leave the living fronds, because the palm depends on them for food.
Landscaping
Beds drawn up and planted, rock and stone borders set, and low-voltage lights run along the walks. On a lakefront lot, the strip closest to the water gets a plan of its own.
Sod installation
A few dead patches by the driveway or a full lawn swap before you sell. We lift the old turf, level the sand, and water in the new sod the same day it’s laid.
Sprinkler repair
A zone that won’t start, heads soaking the street or the seawall, a controller that never got the new schedule. We track it down, repair it, and leave the timer on your legal watering day.
Lawn aeration
Hollow-tine core aeration for the packed parts of a lawn, so your one weekly watering soaks in rather than sheeting off.
HOA & commercial
Community common areas, entrances, pond banks, offices and storefronts, maintained on a single fixed monthly contract.
