Signs your Tavares lawn needs aeration

  • RunoffWater from the sprinklers sheets across the lawn and onto the drive, or down the slope toward the lake, before it soaks in.
  • Hard groundA screwdriver won’t go in easily even after a rain.
  • Worn pathsThin, struggling grass along the route the dog, the kids or the lawn mower takes every week.
  • Spongy turfA thick layer of thatch between the blades and the soil that holds water at the surface.

Do Florida lawns need aeration?

Less often than lawns up north. Sandy Lake County soil drains quickly and doesn’t pack down evenly. What does get compacted is specific: the strip where cars park, worn paths, ground graded with fill when a newer subdivision went in, and lawns that get driven on while they’re soggy.

So we aerate the parts that need it, not the whole lot on a fixed yearly schedule. On a lakefront lot, loosening a packed slope means more of the water stays in the lawn instead of running toward the lake.

When to aerate a lawn in Florida

Between late spring and the end of summer, while St. Augustine and Bahia are growing fast enough to close the holes within weeks. Skip the cool months, when the grass is close to dormant, and skip a lawn already stressed by drought. Right after a downpour is wrong too: soggy soil smears around the tines instead of coming out as clean plugs.

Common lawn aeration mistakes

  • Spiking instead of coringSolid spikes press soil sideways and can make compaction worse. We only use hollow tines that pull plugs.
  • Wrong seasonAerating dormant winter grass leaves holes open for weeds for months.
  • Hitting the sprinklersWe flag every head, shallow pipe and lighting cable before the machine goes on the lawn.
  • Raking up the plugsThe cores should stay where they fall. They break down in a few rains and mowings.
  • Expecting it to fix everythingAeration won’t fix deep shade or bare sand. St. Augustine has no seed to fill in, so a lawn that’s mostly gone needs sod.

From late spring through summer, while the grass is growing fast enough to fill the holes. Avoid winter, drought stress, and soil that’s soaked from a storm.
Sprinkler water running off before it soaks in, ground that’s hard to push a screwdriver into, thin grass along worn paths, and a spongy layer of thatch.
Not as a yearly ritual. Sandy soil drains well, so most Tavares lawns only need it where the ground is compacted, such as parking strips, worn paths and graded fill.
Using spikes instead of hollow tines, aerating dormant grass, hitting sprinkler heads, raking up the plugs, and expecting aeration to fix shade or bare spots that need sod.
