Residential landscaping in Tavares, FL

Beds drawn up and planted, rock and stone borders set, and low-voltage lights run along the walks. On a lakefront lot, the strip closest to the water gets a plan of its own.

Landscape installation for Tavares homes

  • PlantingShrubs, hedges, groundcovers and flowering perennials, spaced for the size they’ll reach in a few years rather than crammed in for day one.
  • Bed layoutNew beds sketched from the aerial photo of your lot, with curves wide enough for a mower to follow and no slivers of grass to trim by hand.
  • Decorative rockRiver rock, pea gravel and accent stone over a fabric underlayer, for the spots where mulch keeps washing out or blowing away.
  • Edging and bordersStone, brick or block set along the bed line to hold rock and mulch in place and keep the turf out.
  • LightingLow-voltage fixtures for walks, entries, trees and the side of the house that faces the lake.

What to plant on the strip next to the lake

Lakefront yards on Lake Dora, Lake Eustis and Lake Harris are where Tavares landscaping differs most. UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping recommends a low-maintenance zone at least 10 feet wide along the water that isn’t mowed, fertilized or sprayed. Planted with native grasses and shrubs, that band slows runoff from the lawn and filters it before it reaches the lake.

We build that zone on the upland side of the seawall or bank: bunch grasses, low natives and a clear path down to the dock. Anything in the water or below the seawall needs permits and a marine contractor, and that’s not work we do. The lakefront lawn care guide covers the city and county rules for that strip.

Choosing plants for one watering day a week

Tavares follows the St. Johns River Water Management District’s Phase III water shortage order (No. 2026-017) from the St. Johns River Water Management District, and homes get odd-numbered addresses on Saturday and even-numbered addresses on Sunday. No irrigation between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. That applies to sprinklers pulling from the lake as well as city water, so a waterfront address doesn’t buy extra days.

That makes plant choice the whole game. Once their roots are down, firebush, Simpson’s stopper, coontie, blue plumbago, muhly grass and dwarf Walter’s viburnum all get through a Tavares summer on one watering a week. We group plants with similar needs onto the same zone, so the thirsty ones don’t set the schedule for the whole bed. Fresh plantings need closer attention for their first weeks, which is why planting is timed for the cooler months or the start of the rainy season when possible.

Where river rock and stone make sense

A rock bed earns its place where water is the problem. Under a roofline with no gutters, rain digs a trench in mulch and splashes it onto the walls; rock stays put. A shallow river-rock swale can also carry roof water across the yard into a planted area, instead of straight down the lawn toward the lake.

Rock does have trade-offs. It soaks up afternoon heat and throws it back at plants and west-facing walls, it adds nothing to sandy soil, and loose stones that drift into the lawn turn into mower projectiles. So it goes down over fabric, behind a set border, and away from the beds that need cooler, moister soil.

Low-voltage landscape lighting

Path lights along the front walk, a wash across the house, uplights in a tree, and a soft line of light toward the water so steps down to the dock are visible at night. Every system we put in is low voltage, powered by a transformer plugged into an exterior outlet.

If there’s no outdoor outlet where the transformer needs to go, a licensed electrician installs one first, and we’ll say so in the quote. We keep the lighting on land: docks and boathouses are wired by electricians.

How we price landscaping in Tavares

Send the address. We measure beds, borders and turf from Lake County parcel records and a current aerial image, then quote one fixed price with every plant and material listed. If your community needs architectural approval before a new bed or rock area goes in, that itemized plan is what you hand the committee.

After it’s installed, the crew that mows your lawn can look after the beds too, all on one invoice.

Plant for your conditions so you’re not fighting them: drought-tolerant natives in the sun, shade plants under trees, thirsty plants grouped on their own zone, and a planted or rock bed in place of turf where grass keeps failing. On a lakefront lot, an unmowed native strip by the water cuts upkeep too.
In Florida, the UF/IFAS program is called Florida-Friendly Landscaping. Elsewhere you’ll hear xeriscaping. Both mean choosing plants that thrive on the rain and watering you already get.
Hourly rates are hard to compare because crews work at different speeds. We quote a fixed price for the finished job, with the plants and materials itemized, so you’re comparing results rather than hours.
Up to the seawall or the top of the bank, yes. Work in the water or below the seawall needs permits and a marine contractor. We plant the upland strip, ideally as a native buffer at least 10 feet wide.
Not for the low-voltage systems we install, which plug into an existing outdoor outlet. A new outlet or circuit, or anything on a dock, is an electrician’s job.
