Lakefront lawn care in Tavares

A town built between three lakes

Tavares occupies a strip of land with Lake Eustis to the north, Lake Dora to the south and Lake Harris to the west. The Dead River carries Lake Harris into Lake Eustis, and the Dora Canal links Lake Dora to Lake Eustis, all part of the Harris Chain of Lakes. The city’s seaplane base sits on the Lake Dora waterfront inside Wooton Park, which is where the “America’s Seaplane City” name comes from. That geography means a big share of Tavares lawns drain, one way or another, into the chain. What happens on the last few feet of grass matters more here than in an inland subdivision.

Mowing up to a seawall or a natural bank

• Stay backThe mower deck stops short of the seawall cap or the soft bank. Wheels near a crumbling shoreline tear it up.
• Trim the edgeThe final strip is cut with a string trimmer, aimed so the debris falls on the lawn side.
• Blow inlandClippings are pushed back onto the turf, away from the water, the dock and the boat ramp.
• Leave a buffer if you want oneUF/IFAS recommends a waterside low-maintenance zone at least 10 feet wide that isn’t mowed, fertilized or sprayed. Tell us and we’ll mow around it.

The buffer guidance comes from UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping, Principle 9, “Protect the Waterfront”. A band of taller vegetation along the bank slows runoff and filters it before it reaches the lake.

The rest of the yard gets the same UF/IFAS cut heights as anywhere else. Keeping it tall also shades the sandy soil and slows runoff:

Clippings belong on the lawn, not in the lake

Both the City of Tavares and Lake County write this into code in nearly the same words: grass clippings and other vegetative material may not be washed, swept or blown into storm drains, ditches, water bodies, wetlands, sidewalks or roadways, and anything that lands there by accident has to be removed immediately. The reason is nutrients. UF/IFAS notes that clippings carry nitrogen and phosphorus that feed algae if they reach a storm drain or the water. State regulators have listed Lake Harris and Lake Dora as impaired by nutrients, and the Lake County Water Authority runs a treatment facility to strip phosphorus flowing into the Harris Chain. A bag’s worth of clippings blown off a seawall every week works against all of that.

Fertilizer setbacks depend on the city line

We don’t apply fertilizer. But whoever does needs to know which code covers the parcel, because a Tavares mailing address doesn’t always mean City of Tavares rules:

• Inside city limitsNo fertilizer within 10 feet of a lake, canal, wetland or the top of a seawall, cut to 3 feet with a deflector shield, drop spreader or sharp-edged liquid applicator. No nitrogen or phosphorus during a flood, tropical storm or hurricane watch or warning, or on saturated soil.
• Unincorporated Lake CountyA 15-foot fertilizer-free setback from water bodies, wetlands and seawalls. Nitrogen and phosphorus banned on turf from June 1 through September 30, plus the same storm-watch rule.

Watering from the lake still counts

Tavares is under the Phase III water shortage order (No. 2026-017) from the St. Johns River Water Management District. As of September 2026:

• SaturdayOdd-numbered addresses

• TuesdayBusinesses and HOA common areas

No irrigation between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The order applies to private wells and pumps that draw ground or surface water, so a sprinkler system pulling straight from the lake follows the same day as one on city water. Properties whose only irrigation source is reclaimed water are exempt. New landscaping gets extra days for its first weeks under the City of Tavares notice. Where our work stops

• No chemicalsNo fertilizer, weed killer or pesticide, near the water or anywhere else.
• Nothing below the waterlineRemoving aquatic plants in Florida waters generally needs an FWC permit; the exemption is narrow. See FWC aquatic plant permits.
• No seawall or dock workWe mow and trim to the cap. Cracks, erosion and dock repairs need a marine contractor.
• No big limbs over the lakeLarge branches hanging over water or a boathouse are a job for a licensed tree service.
